Certified legal specialists support and advise lawyers and attorneys or are the first point of contact for legal issues in a company. Within this continuing education program, you will acquire a broad range of knowledge in civil law, civil procedure, criminal procedure, commercial law, business law, as well as state and administrative law.

  • In law firms and fiduciary companies, paralegals provide services that are charged directly to the client.
  • In legal departments of banks, insurance companies and commercial and industrial enterprises, paralegals are members of the legal team.
  • In federal, cantonal, city and municipal administrations as well as in associations and other institutions, paralegals take care of legally correct and efficient business transactions.
  • In human resource management departments, paralegals contribute to legally sound personnel management, among other things.
  • In patent attorney's offices as well as patent and trademark departments of larger companies, paralegals are responsible for the administrative processing of property right applications and the management of property right portfolios.
  • At courts and criminal investigation authorities, paralegals contribute to the efficient management of proceedings and files.
  • As independent legal specialists, they work on behalf of law firms, companies or private individuals.

Requirements

You will be admitted to the diploma program at the College of Law if you meet the following criteria:

  • Upper secondary school leaving certificate
  • Swiss Federal Certificate of Proficiency in Business Administration Profile B, E or M
  • Federally recognized diploma from a commercial secondary school
  • Matura certificate with a major in economics
  • Other federal certificate of proficiency and professional examination for police officer with federal certificate of proficiency
  • Other federal certificate of proficiency and additional commercial/business training at tertiary level with formal qualification (technical business management, dipl. Betriebswirtschafter/-in HF etc.)
  • At least two years of professional experience after basic training
  • Exercise of at least 50% professional activity in which legal issues are dealt with. The following fields of activity are recognized (in individual cases a decision can be made "sur dossier"): Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), police, examining magistrate's office, public prosecutor's office, banking and insurance, fiduciary services, law firm, municipal administration, cantonal administration.
