Provider: Lucerne University of Education
The PH Luzern and the University of Fribourg, in collaboration with other universities, offer the Master's program in History Didactics and Public History Education.
On the one hand, the program qualifies graduates to teach history and memory. On the other hand, it qualifies them for activities that require the preparation and communication of historical and memory-cultural knowledge in a broad public context. These include work in publishing houses, in museums, at memorial sites, in associations, in foundations and in companies.
Earning a master's degree is an important career step toward academic employment in higher education or an interesting job in public history education. With a good master's degree, doctoral studies become possible, qualifying for future work in the mediation of history and memory in universities or for a responsible position in politics, business and culture.
The master's program in history didactics and public history education is aimed at students with different basic educational backgrounds, since history didactics is a bridging science with different reference sciences.
The admission privileges and conditions guarantee that all graduate students have completed or are completing at least 60 ECTS credits in a historical science and in history didactics at a recognized university in addition to the 90 ECTS credits in the master's program.
Persons who can prove at least 60 ECTS credits are admitted without conditions or requirements: Bachelor or Master of Arts from a university in history, ancient studies, modern history, contemporary history, cultural studies, art history, philosophy, political science, religious studies, theology, or related coursework.

Students of these above-mentioned programs who cannot prove the 36 ECTS points in a historical science and history didactics required as a prerequisite for admission may enter the program on the condition that they acquire the missing ECTS points prior to the Master's program in the Bachelor's program at the University of Fribourg People and Societies Learn from History. within the framework of a so-called "preliminary program".
