The bachelor's degree program in Cultural Studies of Antiquity aims to impart in-depth knowledge of the cultures of antiquity and their reception. It is interdisciplinary in nature, with the fields of literary studies (Greek/Latin studies), history and archaeology playing the central functions and supporting roles. The special feature of this cultural studies program lies in the bringing together of various historical evidences (literary texts, material legacies) and their reception over the centuries. "Antiquity" is understood here, by including the Ancient Near East, in a broader sense. This deliberately open horizon allows us to grasp not only the continued influence of antiquity in numerous "renaissances" from the Middle Ages to the present, but also processes of reception within antiquity.
In the context of another Bachelor's degree program in the humanities, this course can also be selected as an academic minor.
Prerequisite for admission to studies is the general university entrance qualification (Abitur) or a recognized equivalent university entrance qualification.
